A fearsome foray into my fiber follies. I talk about weaving, knitting, spinning and dyeing. Some chatter about the sheep, goats, pigs and chickens.

closer to the first warp

Many things had to be packed up to make space for the new loom.

Without going into what stayed, what was stored and what was trashed, let me just say it has taken five days.

I'm still not done.

But the Union got to stay after a lot of rearranging.

This is the filthy chimney breast wall...before.

Chimney breast after.
New shelves freshly primed.

Cranbrook from the doorway.

....from the Union

Once the final coat of paint is on the shelves, and it has dried of course, the room can be finished and the Maiden Warp can commence.

Why thank you, Peg! I'm excited and frightened at the same time. Now I am approaching the learning curve portion of the new loom. Going from jack to counter march is intimidating!

I can't begin to imagine the learning curve though I remember when Leigh was going through it. I also remember that she survived very happily. I cannot believe how huge it is. I'd have to forfeit the dining room to accommodate something like that. It's almost a room all by itself!

The hardest parts of the curve for me were first the tie-up, then the shed. Of course, I was so anxious to try all 8 shafts, that I had to use them all my first time. Looking back, I could have had a less frustrating first-time experience if I'd started with only four. My life line was Joanne Hall's Tying Up the Countermarch Loom. Now I wouldn't trade my CM for anything!

Hi, Marie. I just had to write and say that next weekend my cousin is bring me my grandnmother's Bexell Cranbrook from the 1950's which I haven't seen in close to twenty years. So there is a sense in which you and I are journeying together. Beginning this past January I returned to weaving after a 15 yr or so hiatus, and I've been using my Harrisville. I am thrilled about getting the Cranbrook.

Now on to some info: from the pictures you have provided I take it the slots you are asking about are in the castle above the back beam. Is that correct? If so I'm guessing they are for a secondary warp beam or something. But I will ask Tom Knisely at the Mannings when I am up there later this week.

Which brings me to my next topic. Have you been to The Mannings? If not, you MUST go. It is about 3hrs from you, they have a Cranbrook floor model, Tom teaches a one-day course on Countermarche looms a couple of times a year, and he can help you so much. I've known since March that I was getting a Bexell Cranbrook, and he has been so helpful. He knows about the original Bexell and the changes over the years.

I'll let you know more when I get mine.

What a great loom!!!!!!! I can see why you might be intimidated by it. We're all waiting to see your first project.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Leigh, Anne and Sharon
I have Joanne's book and I've tied up all that needs to be tied up. I'm warping now so I'll see how well I did or didn't do, as the case may be.
Ann, yes I've been to the Mannings and it is a wonderful place. It's funny how we have been taking the same journey. Let me know when you get your loom and please take a picture. Do you have a blog?
Sharon, the loom room is the second largest room in the house. Bob wouldn't let me put it in the bedroom. I see nothing wrong with forfeiting your dining room. You can eat in your loom room instead!

Barbara! I see you'll be at Rhinebeck. I'll try to find you.
I'm putting on my first warp now for a Rosepath rug. Keep your fingers crossed. The beaming has been effortless. A big change from the Harrisville, thankfully. Easier than the Union as well. The warp beam diameter is 37" which decreases the winding rotations.

Marie, Tom was on vacation when I went to The Mannings this week, so I couldn't ask about the notches on your Cranbrook. I looked at the Schacht Cranbrook on display and it does not have them. I'm curious to find out whether mine will have those, and if so I'll know it is a feature of the Bexell Cranbrook.

No, I don't have a blog, at least not one that is up and running. It's one of those projects that is on the back burner. I may try to find time in the next couple of weeks to begin it, but if I don't do it before entering grad school in two weeks, then it won't happen until at least Christmas break.

Ooooh, joy! Looks lovely!

Have you been receiving the telepathic messages I send you every morning when I stand on the beautiful rug in my bathroom and enjoy the texture under my toes and admire the perfection of your selvages?

We stayed at a gorgeous beach house week before last and the only thing it was missing was Marie rugs. Please tell me if/when you are ready to take commissions and how much and what kind of fabric since I'd have to match DH's friend's wife's weird redheaded greens, ???

Marie, I have a question for you. I now have my Bexell Cranbrook, and my cousin, who had not done much weaving and has done none in several years, helped me put the castle and beams together. I am now in the process of oiling, etc., and checking the parts of this older model (circa 1940-1945) against Schacht's current model and assembly instructions. As I've done so I noted that Schacht has the treadle beam installed with the treadle bar hanging. My cousin assembled it with the bar above the treadle beam, and I'm thinking that's probably incorrect. Which way does yours go?

BTW, I'm thinking that the notch in the top of your castle is for a supplementary warp. That seams reasonable when looking at pictures of countermarche looms with supplementary warp beams. Mine does not have that notch.

Anne, I'm not sure what you mean by the treadle bar. Are talking about the rear assembly where the treadles are attached or the treadle holder which is closer to the front? The rear portion is a long beam that fits into the slots of the 2 sides. The treadles do hang down from there. The treadle holders are attached with a large screw on either side. There is an elongated slot to adjust the holder. I'm not sure why. Mine sits on the floor. If you want photos send me your email address. I've been out of town so I'm sorry for the delay in answering you. I'll now go to your blog!

When I say treadle beam I am referring to the beam near the floor under the warp beam onto which the treadle bar is attached. The treadles are strung onto the treadle bar. On many looms the bar sticks out either sideways from the treadle beam or under the beam. The way my treadle beam fits, the bar has to either be on top or underneath, and my cousin assembled it with it on top. It seems to put the treadles very high.

I notice that there were a lot of changes between my Cranbrook, made before 1946, and yours. You can get a glimpse of those on my blog. Yours looks very much as it does now, and my guess is that the treadles are hung as they currently are. In wonder how that is--from the top, bottom, or side of the treadle beam?

BTW, I my loom does not have a treadle separator (holder near front), although I think I'll add one at some point, as I do like that you can lock a treadle inbto the down position with it.
